How to choose a chess coach for a 4-year-old
Four-year-olds learn through play. Here is what to look for before you book a first class.
Start with temperament, not rating
A high chess rating does not make someone good with a four-year-old. Look for patience, a warm voice and a habit of turning rules into stories.
Watch the intro video and notice how the coach speaks to young children.
Short, playful classes
At this age 30 to 45 minutes is plenty. Good coaches mix the board with games, puzzles and movement.
Be wary of anyone promising tournament results in a few weeks.
Check the basics
Look for the ID verified badge and, for home visits, the background checked badge.
Book a trial class first and stay in the room for the first session.
